Researchers make attosecond-scale measurements by passing an attosecond light pulse through a material. When this pulse interacts with electrons inside the material, it gets distorted. By monitoring these distortions, scientists can create 3D maps of the electrons and make movies of their motion.

Our results will expand the field of attosecond science, making it possible to capture the attosecond motion of electrons in a broader range of atoms, molecules, liquids, and materials. Methods Laser system: In our experiment, laser wavelengths of 1.3 and 2 μm are generated in a three-stage OPA seeded by a white-light continuum. Just as femtosecond pulses allow the observation of the motion of atoms in molecules, attosecond pulses will allow us to trace electronic motion and electronic relaxation (such as inner-shell dynamics) in atoms and molecules. In addition, attosecond science will have strong, phased laser fields perfectly synchronized with the attosecond pulse. “The Frontiers of Attosecond and Ultrafast X-ray Science” Erice, Sicily, Italy: March 10-16, 2019.

Attosecond pulses are produced in a process called high-order harmonic generation, in which a short, intense laser pulse interacts with atoms or molecules in a highly nonlinear process, leading to the generation of high-order frequencies of the fundamental laser with a large spectral bandwidth, supporting pulses with attosecond duration. The Lund Attosecond Science Center (LASC) combines three collaborating research groups: Attosecond Physics: From lasers to applications (Groupleaders: Cord Arnold, Anne L'Huillier) Attosecond XUV Spectroscopy (Groupleader: Johan Mauritsson) Intense XUV Attosecond Physics (Groupleader: Per Johnsson) The aim of LASC is to study dynamics of matter and for the rst time measure pulses shorter than one femtosecond (1 fs = 10 15 s), so called attosecond (1 as = 10 18 s) pulses [1]. With these pulses the possibility to do attosecond time-resolved measurements opened up. Since electron dynamics take place on this time scale, the advent of attosecond pulses meant 2020-06-02 · Tabletop attosecond light sources in the soft X-ray (SXR) spectral region based on high-harmonic generation are highly desirable in chemical and material sciences since they can spectroscopically Generating stable optical waveforms and measuring them with (sub-)attosecond temporal accuracy and single-photon sensitivity will enable spectroscopy at its fundamental limits.
